Sprague Brook Park in southeast Erie County was acquired by Erie County in 1963 through state and federal aid programs, bringing more than 2,200 acres of parkland including Eighteen Mile Creek, Beeman's Creek, and Larkin Woods into county ownership, and in 1964 an additional 86 acres in the towns of Sardinia and Concord were purchased for expansion. Located in the rural, well-forested towns of Concord and Sardinia, Sprague Brook Park is one of the largest developed multi-purpose county parks at 974 acres and the only facility in the park system offering overnight camping. The park centers on 130 campsites in three large camping areas and includes features such as a Veteran's Memorial, the Sprague Brook Casino, three ponds, numerous forest trails, and amenities for large group picnics and outings. Its terrain is generally gently sloping, with some severe topography in the northeast section, and the park is known for natural scenery along the brook, in the woodlands, and atop the hillside of Kissing Bridge Ski area. While some active recreation is offered, the emphasis is on passive recreation, and the park is also a popular destination for winter activities such as sledding and cross-country skiing. The Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway is a 70 mile route encompassing five towns and three villages within Erie County, New York.
