Since 1810, many taverns and hotels stood here, including McClure, Cross Keys, Bastian, and the Grand Central Hotel, which burned on December 27, 1902. The new Stokey Hotel was built in 1903 and was later renamed the Kaufman Hotel by owner E. F. Kaufman. A fire closed the hotel in 2011, but the local landmark was totally restored in 2020 by Patrick Boylan.
