The first Methodist Episcopal church was a two-story brick building built in 1864. Its cornerstone was retained when that building was torn down in 1893 to make way for a larger and more suitable church. The Reverend I. M. Gable, a student of architecture, served as pastor, drew the plans, and supervised construction of the present church. Two large glass-lighted crosses still exist on the church tower.
