Between this plaque and Lake Erie, thirty-seven acres became the site of one of Canada’s most popular tourist attractions. John E. Rebstock’s success in establishing a religious campground in 1888 brought prosperity to the area, which rapidly grew into a recreational resort known as “Canada’s playground” and “Buffalo’s Coney Island.” Turn-of-the-century patrons arrived by lake steamers, and the S.S. Canadiana’s last trip in 1956 ended that era. Under the Hall family’s ownership, the park prospered for decades and reached its peak during the mid-century big band era, when the Dorsey brothers and Glenn Miller orchestras played in the world-famous Crystal Ballroom. It was remembered for Hall’s candy kisses and suckers, the bathing beach, and its many rides, including the Cyclone and Comet coasters that thrilled millions. After years of decline, the park closed in 1989, and except for the break wall and pier, demolition erased nearly all traces of its existence.
