Near Cuckoo Tavern, Captain Jack Jouett, Jr. began a perilous horseback ride between midnight and dawn on June 4, 1781, traveling to Monticello and thereby saving Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia General Assembly in session at Charlottesville from capture by British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, protecting the author of the Declaration of Independence and contributing to the liberty of his country.
