A sawmill and millpond built on this site by O.S. Garretson opened on Sept. 20, 1886. By 1897, the mill belonged to Frank H. Goodyear and cut an average of 7,000,000 feet of lumber a month. A 200 hp boiler, with steam lines running through the mill pond, kept the pond from freezing. The dock had room to load thirty railroad cars at a time. The mill employed 175 men at average wages of $1.90 per day, for a monthly payroll of $8,000.00. For its time, it was rated the largest mill of its kind in the world. The Sept. 30, 1911 flood destroyed it completely.
