The tree stood in the center of New Garden burying ground, where the first skirmish of the Battle of Guilford Court House occurred in 3d. month 1781. Nearby are the cornerstones of the original Friends meeting house, which was used as a hospital during the battle. The men who died were laid to rest under this oak.
