Nature
San Mateo Arboretum in Central Park preserves mature pine, oak, cedar, and redwood groves planted more than a century ago on the former William Kohl property by John McLaren. Its development and care are closely connected to the San Mateo Arboretum Society, a volunteer-run nonprofit founded in 1975 by Marion Panaretos that supports the gardens through horticultural events, classes, and maintenance of the rose garden, plant nurseries, and native plant garden. The surrounding park also includes a Japanese tea garden, designed by Nagao Sakurai and dedicated in 1966 to honor the sister-city relationship between San Mateo and Toyonaka, Japan.
