In March 1846, after Jose Castro, Mexican Military Commander, ordered John C. Fremont from the country, Fremont, with Kit Carson and 60 men, moved to the top of the peak, built entrenchments, raised a flag, and awaited attack. The Bear Flag Incident and the Mexican War followed.
