Fort St. Pierre was a French colonial outpost established on the Yazoo River in 1719 as the northernmost French post on the eastern bank of the Mississippi in Lower Louisiana. Built to strengthen French influence against English traders from Carolina and support expansion in the Yazoo valley, it was a substantial fortified complex with a palisade and moat. Its brief existence ended when a band of Natchez destroyed it in a surprise attack on December 11, 1729, after relations deteriorated. Archaeological work in the 1970s identified and excavated the site, revealing fort features and artifacts that provide an unusually clear view of frontier military life, colonial rivalry, Indigenous resistance, and exchange.
