Great Western Schoolhouse, west of St. Clairsville, Ohio, was built in 1870 beside the developing National Road and served as a one-room school until 1952. Preserved in its traditional form, it retains the scale and character of rural education in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Now operating as a museum devoted to early education in southeastern Ohio, it links the history of local schooling with the broader growth of travel and settlement along the National Road.
