Crash of a United States B-52 Bomber

On January 13, 1964, a United States B-52 bomber on a routine flight crashed over this area. For more than five days in subzero weather and deep snow, local citizens gave their time, energy, and skill to assist air and ground rescue teams in recovering the victims. Those remembered include Major Robert L. Payne, Major Robert E. Townley, Staff Sergeant Melvin Wooten, and the survivors Major Thomas W. McCormick and Captain Parker C. Peedin. The event also honors the constant vigilance of the men of the United States Air Force in protecting the security and freedom of the United States and recognizes the local citizens' readiness to help.
