In the 1950s, Lanis Ethridge added this shed to the farm's central building complex as mechanized methods replaced older ways of working the land. Although tractors had been used on the farm from an early date, the main tasks of cotton production—planting, cultivating, and picking—had continued to rely on tenants working with mules until the 1950s. The McCormick-Deering 'F 30 Farmall' tractor still kept in the shed was purchased around 1936 and was affectionately known as 'Big Bertha.' Before Johnson Mill Road was realigned and this building was constructed, the area stood at the edge of a large cotton field that stretched northward to the woods beside the Schoolhouse, where soil conservation terraces can still be seen.
