Constructed in 1749, this area contains one of the earliest mill sites on Red Clay Creek. A three-story flour mill once stood at the center of activity there and was the location of Oliver Evans' first automated flour mill operation. In 1790, his mill became the third invention patented by the newly created U.S. Patent Office. Jonathan Fell purchased the site in 1826 and converted the flour mill into a spice mill that ranked as the nation's leading spice mill for fifty years. The district includes eight structures, is bisected by Faulkland Road, and contains the only known example in the state of a chalet style tenant house.
