Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas's Lee Creek Valley is known for its rugged sandstone terrain, caves, crevices, fossils, and the cool-air cave called Devil's Ice Box, as well as for recreation centered on trails, camping, cabins, and Lake Devil. The valley also preserves a long human story: its caves sheltered outlaws along the Butterfield Stage Line before the Civil War, later hid Confederate guerrillas, and the old road was used by regular troops in wartime movements. Remains of the flood-destroyed town of Anna survive there. Much of the park's enduring character comes from Civilian Conservation Corps construction begun in 1933, whose well-preserved Rustic architecture was later nationally recognized.
