On May 26, 1937, Walter Reuther and three fellow union organizers attempted to enter The Rouge by way of the Miller Road pedestrian bridge but were assaulted by Ford security. The Battle of the Overpass became one of the most famous events in the history of the American labor movement and led to the Ford-UAW labor agreement in May 1941.
