In the midst of the Depression, unemployed autoworkers, their families, and union organizers staged a Hunger March down Miller Road demanding jobs and benefits from Henry Ford. The event turned violent when marchers clashed with Dearborn police. Five people were killed and 19 injured. Newspapers alleged the marchers were communists, but they were in fact people of all political, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
