Brigadoon State Nature Preserve in Kentucky, beside Barren River Lake, protects 184 acres of mostly mature forest and is open to the public. The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves began creating it by purchasing 92 acres from The Nature Conservancy, which entered the state preserve system on March 14, 1985. An additional 88 acres were added on June 12, 2001, and a further 4-acre tract brought the preserve to its current size. Its forest is dominated by American beech, maple, and tulip poplar, and it is especially valued for spring wildflowers, including several species rare or uncommon in Kentucky, as well as habitat for migratory and resident birds and a 1-mile trail.
