Built in 1890 for the commander of the naval detachment situated here on 315 acres ceded by the Army, this blue puddingstone house of quartz conglomerate was first occupied by Commander J.B. Coghlan, and its flagpole was made to resemble a ship's mast. Lake Denmark Station lasted 69 years, evolving from a powder storage depot into an air rocket test facility before the Navy decommissioned its installation in 1960.
