Joyce Wildlife Management Area is a 42,292-acre protected tract in southeastern Louisiana between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, formed through donations, purchases, and leases beginning with major additions in 1982, 1994, 2008, and 2010. A notable part of its expansion preserved 100 acres of ancient Ponchatoula cypress that had earlier been spared from clear-cutting through the efforts of John Jacob Dahmer. The area includes swamp and freshwater marsh that support year-round waterfowl, other game, fish, and nesting bald eagles and osprey. It is used for hunting, fishing, hiking, bird watching, and small boating, and has also been the focus of wetland restoration and the rebuilding of its Swamp Walk after hurricane damage.
