Tickfaw State Park, about seven miles west of Springfield in Livingston Parish, opened in May 1999 and became a popular destination for its natural landscape, varied recreation, and easy access from New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Covering about 1,200 acres in the Tickfaw River floodplain, it includes trails and boardwalks through cypress-tupelo swamp, bottomland hardwood forest, mixed pine hardwood forest, and the river itself. About 560 acres remain undeveloped west of the river. The park also offers cabins, campsites, a nature center, fishing, canoeing, and a water playground, and it is recognized for outstanding natural characteristics and diverse wildlife.
