Near Warsaw, Illinois, the Hunziker Winery Site preserves the remains of a winery established in the 1860s by Swiss immigrant vintner Gottlieb Hunziker and his partner William Hoffman. It reflects the period when Hancock County was becoming an important winemaking region, with Warsaw ranking just behind Nauvoo as a local center of production. Hunziker’s wines earned a strong reputation, including multiple awards at the 1870 Iowa State Fair in nearby Keokuk across the Mississippi River, and he continued producing wine there until his death in 1893. Surviving features include the wine house walls, where grapes were processed and fermented, and an underground wine cellar.
