Minnesota’s State Capitol in Saint Paul serves as the seat of state government while also functioning as a museum and ceremonial public space. The present structure, Minnesota’s third capitol, replaced earlier buildings from 1854 and 1883 after fire and serious design shortcomings. Designed by Cass Gilbert and opened in 1905, it is a major Beaux-Arts work influenced by the World’s Columbian Exposition and the Rhode Island State House. Its great marble dome, extensive use of carefully selected stone, and substantial art collection make it architecturally significant. Restored from 2013 to 2017, the capitol remains an active governmental center, historic landmark, and symbol of Minnesota public life.
