Rock Creek Station in southeastern Nebraska preserves a key overland travel site used by emigrants on the Oregon and California trails, as well as a former stagecoach and Pony Express station. Established in 1857 by S.C. Glenn as a supply point and campground, it later passed to David McCanles, who added a toll bridge and developed an East Ranch across the creek. In 1861, after McCanles sold the property, he returned seeking overdue payment and was killed in a confrontation by the young James Butler Hickok, years before Hickok became known as Wild Bill. Today the park preserves trail ruts, reconstructed buildings, and the broader story of migration and conflict there.
