The North Baltimore Elementary and High School stood at 124 S. Second St. and was dedicated November 11, 1927. The tan and brown brick building replaced a school built in 1884 that was destroyed by fire on January 26, 1926. Serving children in grades 1-12, it included classrooms for home economics and business courses, a 900-seat auditorium with balcony, a second-floor cafeteria, a gymnasium, administrative offices, and a public library. J.E. Leidy was the superintendent, and R. Vern Northup was the high school principal. The board of education included Dr. E.A. Powell as president, D.B. Bushey as vice president, C.G. Nigh as clerk, and Nellie Roberts and R.E. Simon. The school’s sports teams, once known as the Independents, became the Tigers in 1931. In 1952, Ms. Clara Miller became the building’s first elementary principal and the district added a kindergarten. After the E.A. Powell Elementary School building was constructed in 1958, students in grades K-6 eventually moved there. In 1964, the district enlarged the gym and added industrial arts and music rooms. In 1974, the administrative offices moved to 110 S. Second St. Auditorium renovations in 1981 brought a new concrete floor, new seating, and an enlarged stage, and in 1987 the cafeteria was moved to the ground floor. On May 27, the Class of 2012 became the last class graduated from the 1927 building. The final event in the auditorium was the musical "Oklahoma!" on June 8-10, 2012, part of the year-long "Bringing Down the House" commemoration. The building was razed later that year.
