Shortly after the town was founded, an application for a post office under the name Franklin was refused because Indiana already had a post office by that name, so residents gathered in a log store to choose another. In a heated discussion, one man proposed Brunswick, another favored Liverpool, and an Irishman insisted on Maloney and prepared to defend it physically rather than accept an English or German name. Mrs. Jackson then appealed to the group’s patriotism and read a letter from a relative serving in the war with Mexico about the American victory at Churubusco, suggesting that the town take that name because it was patriotic and likely unique in Indiana. The group agreed, and the Post Office Department granted a permit in November 1847. The name Churubusco was said to be a Spanish corruption of the Aztec war god Huitzilopochtli and of the city surrounding that war god’s place, Huizilopochoo. According to the account, when Cortez invaded Mexico in 1815 and advanced toward the capital, Montezuma tried to placate him with gifts of gold and slaves, including Dona Marina, who became Cortes’ interpreter and diplomat; when one of his scribes tried to record the city’s name, Dona Marina pronounced it, and the Spaniard rendered it as Churubusco.
