An ancient volcanic crater rich in minerals contained the famous Rossland mines, staked in 1890 by prospectors traveling the nearby Dewdney Trail. Their waste dumps remained from workings that produced 6,000,000 tons of ore worth $125,000,000. These mines gave rise to the City of Rossland and the huge smelter at Trail.
