Columbus Granade, son of Adam Granade and Rebecca Ansley, was a teacher, farmer, author, cartographer, surveyor, legislator, soldier, and poet. He served in Company F, 12th Georgia Battalion Light Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia, from 1862 to 1865. In Wilkes County he served on the school board, was county surveyor, and was clerk of Beaverdam Baptist Church from 1876 to 1913. He created the New Century Map of Wilkes County in 1900, served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1902 to 1904, and authored “Poems and Sayings.” He married Nancy Beck on May 15, 1856. Their children were Flora Estelle, Thomas Adam, Joseph William, and Annie Maud. His homesite was located 200 yards south.
