BigRock Mountain in Mars Hill, Maine, on the western face of Mars Hill, is one of the state’s larger ski resorts. Established in the 1960s, it grew from a downhill ski area into a broader winter recreation center after its 2000 purchase by the Maine Winter Sports Center through Libra Foundation grants. The mountain has 26 trails, two chairlifts, a poma lift, night skiing, about 80 percent snowmaking coverage, and nearly 1,000 feet of continuous vertical drop. Most terrain is designed for intermediate skiers, while advanced and beginner runs fill out the trail system. Cross-country and snowshoe trails, a snow-tube park, and an expanded lodge have strengthened its role as a regional winter hub.
