Aroostook State Park, on the south side of Presque Isle in northern Maine near U.S. Route 1, covers 898 acres including Quaggy Jo Mountain and the shore of Echo Lake. Established in 1938 as Maine’s first state park, it began with a 100-acre donation from members of the Presque Isle Merchants Association. Early ski runs were built by a Works Progress Administration crew, and the park developed into a year-round destination. Its forests and lake support varied wildlife and brook trout, while camping, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, fishing, and canoeing continue to draw visitors. In 2009, a state land purchase expanded the protected area by 145.6 acres.
