Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve near Ridgely, Maryland, in Tuckahoe State Park on the Eastern Shore. Established in 1972 as the Maryland state arboretum, it opened in the 1980s after a major donation from Leon Andrus and was named for the conservation-minded Adkins family. With five miles of paths through meadows and gardens, it maintains more than 600 kinds of native shrubs, trees, wildflowers, and grasses as a living collection that supports land stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay region. Its mission narrowed in the 1990s to Delmarva Peninsula plant communities, and since 1998 it has operated through a public-private partnership.
