Black Mountain is a prominent 10,941-foot peak in the Absaroka Range of southern Montana, within Park County’s Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness and Gallatin National Forest. Rising steeply above nearby creeks and lakes, it has dramatic relief, including a west face that climbs more than 4,300 feet in just 1.2 miles. Water from its slopes forms the headwaters of Pine Creek, which eventually reaches the Yellowstone River. Its descriptive name was officially adopted in 1923 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. With a subarctic climate of severe winters and short summers, the mountain is known today for its remote setting and striking wilderness presence south of Livingston.
