At this quarry, workers used neat, machine-drilled blasting holes in the rock to set off black powder or dynamite each day at noon and again in the evening as they departed. When they returned, they dug out the stone loosened by the blast. Local farmers said the noon blast became a signal telling them when to go home for lunch.
