This cemetery predates the church built in 1732 by colonists who arrived in 1731 under Juan Leal Goras. They farmed and raised stock, and their villa, San Fernando, became the first municipality in Texas. Among the unmarked graves is that of the flamboyant Dona Maria Cavillo. The site is now county-owned.
