Nathan Futrell, reputed to be the youngest drummer boy in the War of the Revolution, was born in North Carolina in 1773 and joined the North Carolina Continental Militia. He married in 1798, came to Kentucky in 1799, and settled here on Ford's Creek in 1820, where he farmed, set out the first apple orchard, built one of the area's first grist mills, and served as official surveyor. He died in 1829, and he and his wife Charity are buried on the adjacent hill.
