Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay is a glass-decked pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Sacramento River in Redding, California, designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004. Linking both sides of Turtle Bay Exploration Park and the Sacramento River Trail, it became the city’s best-known landmark. Its tilted 217-foot mast forms a working sundial whose moving shadow makes the Earth’s rotation visible. The 700-foot cable-stayed span crosses without river piers to protect salmon spawning grounds, and its asymmetrical design and glowing glass deck make it visually distinctive. Though costly and controversial to build, it helped boost park attendance, tourism, and local commerce.
