Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding, California, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1958 and built from 1960 to 1963 as one of his last works and the last church he designed before his death in 1959. Conceived as a tentlike evocation of ancient Israel’s dwelling and of human life as temporary and migratory, Wright called the design “Pole and Boulder Gothic.” After his death, the congregation built the church themselves under Taliesin Associated Architects’ oversight. The completed portion, with massive rubblestone walls, 23 roof supports, and a cave-like pulpit area, preserves Wright’s symbolic vision and strong response to the rocky hillside.
