Organized in 1847, Jennings Chapel was the first and only Methodist Protestant Church established in Tuscaloosa County. The first two structures used by the congregation stood on this site: a log house built circa 1850 and a clapboard building erected in November 1890. A brick structure was completed in 1956. John H. Harper Sr. organized the church and served as its first pastor for more than 30 years. It was named for Dr. Samuel K. Jennings, a physician and minister of national note in the early years of the Methodist Protestant Church. The first trustees were Dr. Samuel K. Jennings, John H. Harper, Sr., John C. Hamner, Turner P. Hamner, and Richard H. Hamner.
