On May 25, 2008, Scott Patrick Brownfield was recognized for creating a memorial in the shape of a serviceman's dog tag for Samuel D. Shimek, Fayette County's only MIA from the Vietnam War. A senior at Laurel Highlands High School and Fayette Vo-tech, Scott chose the project because of his lifelong involvement with Vietnam Veterans Inc. of Fayette and because visits to the memorial in Hopwood impressed on him that Samuel, as an MIA, never had a proper burial. Wanting to do something special in Samuel's memory and for the Shimek family, Scott presented his idea in August 2007 to V.V.I. members and the Shimek family, and with their approval began a letter-writing campaign for donations and a fundraising dance in October 2007. Community response was overwhelming, and after only two fundraisers he exceeded his goal. A time capsule containing information and records Scott collected during the project was placed inside the stone base. Scott P. Brownfield made the welded mounting bracket, Custom Stone Work provided the stone base and concrete, Island Mould and Machine Co. made the engraved dog tag, RC Pewter Works made the bronze plaque, and Vietnam Veterans of Fayette Co. provided the lighting and electric.
