Old Center Village, or Centerville, was settled about 1800 two miles northeast of here and for many years was an important trading center. Inhabitants of Ware, Pierce, Clinch, Coffee, and Appling Counties came there with staple cotton, beeswax, honey, jerked venison, hides, furs, and other goods to exchange for flour, sugar, coffee, shot, powder, and commodities they did not produce. It was also a place where disputes were settled and sports enjoyed, and it served as a regular stop for stage coaches traveling the King's Road. The village went out of existence after the coming of the railroad.
