London Grove Monthly Meeting was officially established in 1714, and its membership roster still includes family members of that original gathering. Meeting for Worship is open to all and begins at 9.30am each First Day, with participants sitting in expectant silence and rising to speak when spirit spontaneously inspires them; children join for the first ten minutes before moving to their own program of play and learning, and child care is also available. A community pre-school and kindergarten program has existed for over 50 years, offering intimate groups at a 9:1 ratio and activities designed to foster creativity, appreciation of nature, respect for individuals, and problem solving. With twenty committees covering subjects from climate change to religious education, members have many opportunities to put their faith into action, and they also participate in global initiatives through Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the American Friends Service Committee. The meeting also houses the Penn Charter Oak Tree, a young tree when William Penn arrived in Pennsylvania in 1682; when last officially measured, the champion white oak had a breast high girth of 22 feet 2 inches, a height of 82.5 feet, and a spread of 117 feet. In warm weather, occasional meetings are held under the tree, and many couples have exchanged marriage vows beneath it. The burial ground has been active since 1741, with simple Quaker headstones marking the interment locations of members and others connected to the meeting, and the oldest gravesites lying next to the meetinghouse where the old stone wall and metal fence meet.
