Science & Tech
Speakman No. 1 is a historic wooden covered bridge in East Fallowfield Township near Modena, Pennsylvania. Built in 1881, it carries the Burr Truss form across Buck Run and measures 75 feet long. It is notable as the twin of nearby Speakman No. 2, also called the Mary Ann Pyle Bridge, about a quarter mile away. Together, the two bridges show a local concentration of late 19th-century covered-bridge construction. Speakman No. 1 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, recognizing its importance within Pennsylvania’s surviving covered-bridge heritage.
