Lovells Island in Boston Harbor was home to a pair of range lights built in 1903 to guide ships entering the waterway now known as South Channel. Placed 400 feet apart on a magnetic bearing of 228 degrees and connected by a seven-foot walkway, the lights worked together to help vessels line up the channel. Their importance faded after North Channel was dredged deeper and traffic through South Channel declined. In 1939 they were removed during the expansion of Fort Standish, though the oil shed associated with the lights remains on the island.
