Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park is a prominent coastal public space in La Jolla, set on a bluff above the Pacific and encompassing landmarks such as La Jolla Cove, Point La Jolla, Boomer Beach, and Shell Beach. The site has deep roots in Kumeyaay history as part of Mut kula xuy, with Point La Jolla regarded as sacred. Established in 1887 as La Jolla Park, it grew into a leisure destination and civic showpiece shaped by beautification efforts, picturesque design, and notable plantings. It also connects to La Jolla’s marine science, recreation, and public life, and was renamed in 1927 to honor Ellen Browning Scripps.
