Lincoln Homestead State Park preserves the Kentucky setting of the Lincoln family before Abraham Lincoln’s birth, especially the youth of his father, Thomas Lincoln. The site recalls Captain Abraham Lincoln’s move from Virginia in 1781 and 1782, his death in an American Indian attack in 1786, and family tradition that Mordecai Lincoln saved young Thomas. Its historic core includes the original Francis Berry House, where Nancy Hanks lived and worked while Thomas courted her, along with reconstructions of the Lincoln cabin and Thomas’s workshop. The surrounding property also includes land associated with Mordecai Lincoln and remains a place of both family history and public recreation.
