In the spring of 1786, Abraham and Bersheba Lincoln were living on a farm overlooking Long Run in Jefferson County when Abraham and his sons Mordecai, Thomas, and Josiah were attacked by Indians while planting corn; Mordecai killed one attacker, but Abraham was mortally wounded. Shortly after Abraham’s death, Bersheba moved her sons and her daughters, Mary and Nancy, to a house on this site, where Thomas Lincoln, father of President Abraham Lincoln, lived until he was twenty-five years old. A cabinet maker, Thomas made the corner cupboard now displayed in the Lincoln Cabin. The site of Bersheba Lincoln’s cabin was purchased in 1933, and after careful research a replica of the original house was built there. A Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail sidebar places this family history within later milestones in Abraham Lincoln’s life, from his 1809 birth in present-day Larue County, Kentucky, to his family’s move from Kentucky in 1816, his 1841 visit to Farmington in Louisville, his 1842 marriage to Mary Todd of Lexington, his 1847 family visit to Lexington on the way to his only term in Congress, his 1860 election as President of the United States, and his 1865 assassination at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
