In fall of 1861, Federals planned a move into Tennessee by the Cumberland River and, under General D.C. Buell, by land through here. The Confederacy wrecked the important bridge over the Green River on December 10 to block the United States advance. A Union force under Colonel A. Willich was sent to repair and defend the bridge. Confederate forces led by General T.C. Hindman came here to wreck the tracks on December 17, 1861. After a sharp battle, the Confederates withdrew south.
