Dr. Brewster Higley, born in 1822 in Indiana, wrote this song while living in Kansas. Its words were printed in a local paper in 1873 and it became a favorite along the cattle trails. Although it was first published in 1910, Higley never saw a copy and never received any royalty. His last home was in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he died on May 11, 1911.
