On August 3-6, 1777, General Herkimer traveled a 40 mile route to relieve Fort Stanwix. The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, fought between Herkimer's men and St. Leger with his Indians, was the turning point of the Revolution. General Herkimer camped near this spot on the night of August 4, 1777, with 800 men and 400 ox-carts filled with supplies for the relief of Fort Stanwix.
