Ann Jarvis Greely, born in 1831, bought a dry goods store at age twenty and expanded it to offer high quality apparel; in 1895 she was authorized by the state legislature to practice medicine, and she strongly supported temperance and women's suffrage. Mary Ann Clark, born in 1860, went to New York to pursue art and later study botany, began work as a gardener in 1894, purchased greenhouses and moved them to her residence, and founded M.A. Clark, Inc., which lasted until the 1990s. Assunta Rigali Luchini, born in 1875 in Fornaci di Barga, Italy, moved to the United States in 1901 with her husband and daughter and, after her husband's death, took over the family business and expanded it to include restaurants in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.
